February List Sandwiches and January Wrapup
Welcome to February, sandwich fans! February is a short month, which is good since January seems to have been about a year and a half long. And yet we still barely snuck that last sandwich of January 2025 under the wire last night. Let’s take a look at those January sandwiches before moving on to what this month holds in store for the Tribunal.
In January we started with the Princess sandwich of Bulgaria, sometimes called Strandjanka, with the help of our Bulgarian friend Pavel. It’s a type of topped toast that might be made with cheese and egg, or seasoned minced meat, or simply with ham and cheese, and it was a fun one to explore! Next we moved on to the Puccia sandwich of Italy’s Salento peninsula. Puccia is a type of Semolina bread roll that can be stuffed with any number of Italian fillings, and it’s the base for many a terrific sandwich! Finally, we closed out January with the Czech řizek v chlebu, a piece of pork schnitzel served in good Czech rye sourdough bread with mustard and mayonnaise and pickle. January was a pretty good month. Now let’s take a look ahead to February!
This month, the Tribunal will be trying the Mauritian roti chaud, a vegetarian curry wrapped in an Indian flatbread with a spicy tomato sauce. It sounds like the kind of thing that’s right up our alley! Next, we’ll take on the salad sandwich of Australia. We’re always looking for an excuse to get Tribunal contributor Crit to write another piece! Finally, we’ll sample Paraguayan empanadas and see how they taste in a sandwich. I don’t imagine this one will be much like the Wigan Kebab, but it’s sort of the same idea.
We’re looking forward to a month of good sandwiches, and hoping that you are as well! Keep checking back, and we’ll keep writing about them!
Changes to the List
Wikipedia List
- Only 1 change was made in January–cumulatively, over the course of a half-dozen edits or so, in which a misguided but seemingly sincere Finnish editor added an entry and description for a sandwich of burdot and pickles on rye bread. It was deleted shortly thereafter.
Our List
- The current phase of our project is scheduled to end this coming July.
- Fear not! We’ve published a tentative schedule for phase 4. If you are unaware, and if this interests you, you can view a big long list of every sandwich we have written about and that we will be writing about on the Schedule page which you can find in The List menu above or by clicking this link.
I like sandwiches.
I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great
