September List Sandwiches and August Wrapup

Welcome to September, Sandwich Fans! Since the last roundup post, a few things have happened–Sandwich Tribunal hit the 9 year mark on August 21st–we didn’t make much of a fuss about it but another one of those great JP Graziano heirloom tomato subs with a candle stuck in the top would have been nice. Also, Jim did a guest spot on Sandwiches of History that you can view on YouTube or TikTok or Instagram or your social media platform of choice, really. Jim also had another piece published in Newcity, this time both online and in the print edition, about the Sandwiches of Summer. Also, friend of the site and great sandwich writer Jonathan Surratt took Jim’s suggestion to make Puerto Rican style sugar-dusted Mallorca rolls and the sandwich Mallorca de Jamon y Queso with them. Jon even took it one step further by cloning a Puerto Rican McDonald’s sandwich that uses these slightly sweet rolls, the Monchi Burger, which appears to be a McChicken (or a burger) in a non-sugar-dusted Mallorca.

So even before we get into recapping August’s List sandwiches–which as you know we must do before continuing with September’s new List sandwiches–August was a busy month. But in addition to all that, we also wrote about the Indian snack Chilli Cheese Toast, which takes the universally beloved treat of melted cheese on toast and somehow makes it even better! We also tried the ham barbecue sandwiches of Pittsburgh featuring the Chipped Chopped Ham made popular in that area by the regional chain Isaly’s. Finally, we capped off the month with another Taiwanese street food, this one with a spooky name: Coffin Bread. Between Nutritious Sandwich, Small Sausage in Large Sausage, and Coffin Bread, these Taiwanese night markets are killing it in the sandwich naming department!

So we definitely had some sandwich excitement in the month of August around here! Now let’s take a look at what’s coming up in September!

In September the Tribunal will tackle yet another delicious and excessive looking Chilean sandwich (it’s been a while!), the overloaded hot dog they call “Completo.” Everything we’ve covered from Chile has been great, and this looks like no exception! We’ll also be trying our hand at the Collards sandwiches popularized in southeastern North Carolina, which we first heard about from Jonathan Surratt’s blog mentioned above. Jim visited Lumberton earlier this year and tried the real thing from the Brenda’s Touch food truck and recommends you do too if you have the chance! Finally, we’ll be attempting to replicate a down-under take on the classic Italian sub sandwich, the Continental Roll from Perth, sometimes abbreviated as Conti Roll. If you’ve ever been curious what salami and beetroot might taste like together in a sandwich, stick around!

Changes To The List

Wikipedia List

  • A “Tapioca Sandwich” from Brazil was added, that apparently consists of a type of crepe made from tapioca starch that is folded around a filling like ham and cheese and then pressed, according to the Wikipedia editor and some independent research. Time will tell whether this lasts on the Wikipedia list but it seems to potentially be a good addition to ours
  • The usual infighting over whether a hot dog is or is not a sandwich continued throughout the month

Our List

No recent additions to our list. However, Jim mentioned the other day in the piece on chipped ham sandwiches in August that every site mentioned in the 2003 PBS documentary Sandwiches That You Will Like is a sort of Bucket List location. We have been contemplating adding those sandwiches to our List. Some of them are sandwich Types that we’ve already covered, but maybe there will be a few new ones (“snoot” sandwiches from St. Louis, for example!) and speaking for myself, I’d kind of like to have a reason to take those trips sooner than later. Maybe we will scatter them in non-alphabetically just to shake things up. We’ll see.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.

Whoa! I’m going to Perth this month. I will endeavour to find out about this “continental roll” in between drinking and morris dancing
