July List Sandwiches and June Wrapup
Hello, sandwich enthusiasts, and welcome to July! It’s the first of the month as I write this, the weekend before the Fourth of July, and NASCAR weekend in Chicago (so I’ll have to be careful planning any excursions to the city). July brings us some interesting yet simple sandwiches that are a far cry from the more elaborate meals the Tribunal has been tackling lately, and I’m glad to have a light month as a result. Still, those fancier sandwiches are worthy endeavors, as evidenced by our bill of fare in June. Let’s review those and then take a look ahead to what July is bringing us!
In June, the Tribunal took on the Italian bruschetta, an open-face snack sandwich that you may think of as a simple tomato salad on toast, but can be so much more. We made many different kinds and enjoyed them all! We also attempted the Bunny Chow of South Africa, a spicy Durban Curry stuffed into a quarter- or half-loaf of bread. It’s more than a mouthful! The Tribunal also dug into the Portuguese-inspired Caçoila sandwiches of New England while on vacation in Wisconsin. Truly cosmopolitan, as always! Additionally, Jim wrote about the current AI craze and an AI-generated sandwich in particular, with a big hat-tip to his cousin Mike. Skynet may be able to design a decent sandwich, but it doesn’t know the first thing about being human.
Now let’s take a look at the sandwiches the month ahead will bring.
In July we’ll be trying our hand at Cachitos, a Venezuelan snack of ham baked into a soft, crescent-shaped roll. As a general rule, if the fillings get added before the bread is baked we don’t call it a sandwich but these look tasty anyway. We’ll also dig as deeply as we can into the Cheese Roll of New Zealand, a sort of quick toastie that doesn’t look like much but may be harboring hidden depths. We’ll see! Finally, we’ll be getting to Ireland’s Chicken Fillet Roll, which seems again to be relatively straightforward but looks tasty nonetheless!
Good stuff is coming, and I hope you’ll come back around and read it!
Changes to the List
Wikipedia List
- Perth, Australia’s “Continental roll” was re-added to the list–as “Conti roll.” This is already on our list so no changes will be required here
Our List
- A South African type of frybread called Vetkoek was brought to our attention that is often split open and filled with minced meat to make a sandwich. Clearly we must try this and it has been added to our List.
I like sandwiches.
I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great
