April List Sandwiches and March Wrapup

Sandwiches are Serious Business my friends, which is why we here at the Tribunal will never give you a jump scare with some dumb April Fools joke. Probably. But April is a new month, and the first of the month is when we announce which three new sandwiches we’ll be tackling over the next few weeks. First, though, we need to take a look back at the sandwiches we covered in March.

We started March out by taking our shot at Benedictine from Louisville, Kentucky. Benedictine is a cucumber sandwich in a spread, essentially, and I have become mildly addicted to it. Will it show up in other sandwiches in the future? Probably not, but I do know that if Nabisco sees an uptick in its stock prices in the near future it may be from all the Ritz crackers I’m buying. We also spent the month trying the Big Baby double cheeseburger of Chicago’s Southwest side at various establishments. I didn’t get around to making one at home for that piece but I guess I just figured out my plans for this weekend. Finally, we tried a sweet-potato flatbread from the Portuguese island of Madeira called bolo do caco, and some of the many sandwiches that can be made with it. March was a very good month for sandwiches!

Now let’s take a look at what we have coming up in April!

Bondiola is a round cut of pork from the shoulder that in Argentina is sometimes cured into something like coppa and sometimes simply roasted, sliced thick, and served in a bread roll with a citrusy salsa. You had me at pork shoulder, honestly. Braaibroodjie is a type of grilled cheese sandwich–charcoal-grilled, not griddled–containing vegetables and chutney that is commonly served at backyard cookouts or barbecues in South Africa (along with the customary great piles of meat). So far I have no complaints. Finally, we’ll be adding another entry to our Chicago Sandwich Canon series with the Breaded Steak sandwich. I suppose it’s about time I give Ricobene’s another chance, but I’ll be seeking out other purveyors as well.

Great stuff coming up, and I can’t wait!

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
