December List Sandwiches and November Wrapup
Welcome, once again, to The End, my friends. December will be the End of 2022, of course, a year that has seen us continue to flounder in the wake of a global pandemic while corporate America continues to edge us closer and closer to the cyberpunk dystopia that is seeming less science-fictiony by the day. But I don’t mean the end of the year, the end of the world, or even the end of the working class. I mean the End of another trip through a List of Sandwiches. The Tribunal’s Phase 2 ends this month, having once again reached the end of the alphabet, and there are some interesting sandwiches in store for us to close things out with.
Bur first, let’s take a look at what we covered in November! We started the month on the Turkey Devonshire sandwich of Pittsburgh! Based on my research into the possibly-not-at-all-connected-yet-eerily-similar Turkey Devonshire, Hot Brown, and Prosperity Sandwiches, an open-faced turkey and bacon sandwich covered with a cheesy sauce might be the crab form of sandwich evolution. Next we vented our spleen on the Sicilian Vastedda, an organ-meat sandwich with cheese and lemon juice that I might just have to wait until I get to Sicily to try again. (I won’t be making a special trip for it.) Finally, we just spent a week eating nothing but Veggie Burgers and yet we feel no particular urge to move to Portland, Oregon. Given that it’s a hotbed of street food and especially sandwiches I sure wouldn’t mind visiting though.
So let’s take a look at what we have coming up in December!
First up, we’ll be looking at the Wigan Kebab, a slang name for the “pie barm” that is popular in the northwest of England, especially around the Wigan area of Greater Manchester. No word yet on whether smack barm pey wet will be involved. Next, we’ll be trying out the Wilensky Special, a bologna and salami sandwich served by a beloved local lunch counter in Montreal that somehow we missed on our trip there a few years ago. Though I would dearly love to go back, I may just have to make this one at home. Finally, we’ll be investigating the Brazilian Xis, a type of very large, pressed burger-style sandwich with a dazzling variety of potential condiments. It should be interesting, and hat tip to my buddy Matt for letting me know about this one!
Very cool things ahead for the month of December, and after that, no more sandwiches for me ever!
I’m kidding, we have a Phase 3 planned that is currently scheduled to run through 2024. After that, who knows? I have a feeling the world will never stop surprising me with sandwiches!
Changes to the List
Wikipedia List
Not one edit was made to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches during the month of November, according to the page history. Not sure that’s ever happened before. Wild!
Our List
We have also added nothing to our List during that time. However, I have candidates I am considering.
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
