May List Sandwiches and April Wrapup

Welcome back, sandwich fans! We managed to come in under the wire, covering all three of our April sandwiches just in time for May to come around, and now we have three new sandwiches to enjoy. First though, let’s take a look at what we covered in April!

In April we tried our hand at the Indonesian Roti Bakar, a sandwich of toasted bread containing any number of sweet fillings along with melted cheese. It was tastier than it sounds! We also took a crack at ham, salad, bologna salad, and even an experimental hot dog salad that was immediately declared a food crime and nearly landed Jim in jail! This is a joke, probably, but Jim’s not taking any chances and disavows the hot dog salad, we promise. Finally, we tried Ecuadoran Hornado de Chancho and the sandwiches made with its leftovers. If you like pork and garlic, give it a shot!

Now let’s take a look at May’s sandwiches!

We’re back to South American pork sandwiches with Sanduiche de Chola, a Bolivian combination of roasted pork and pickled vegetables that sounds terrific. Can’t wait to try it! We’ll also check out a French sandwich called Le Sandwich Americaine, which of course means “American Sandwich.” It appears to be a sort of Frenchified cross between an American hamburger and a Belgian Mitraillette. Finally, we’ll try Scotch Woodcock, a sandwich that, like Welsh Rarebit, may be misleadingly named. We’ll follow that rabbithole as far as it can take us.

Some pretty good sandwiches ahead, so be sure to come back and read all about them over the course of this month!

Changes to the List

Changes to the Wikipedia list

  • The Irish chicken fillet roll was added on April and appears to be a long roll filled with slices of breaded chicken breast along with sauce, lettuce, etc. Might need to go to Ireland to do this one justice. WE’LL SEE
  • Coronation chicken was added (along with seemingly a 2nd instance of corned beef.) We’ve tried coronation chicken, a kind of curried chicken salad sandwich filling, once or twice here at the Tribunal. We’d try it again I suppose, if it seems worthy of its own entry.

Changes to our list in April

  • Our friend Daniel introduced us to two Italian sandwiches we feel should be added. Trapizzini, the first of them, is a sort of portmanteau (both linguistically and sandwich-wise) combining tramezzini, covered previously on the Tribunal, and pizza. Sounds interesting enough to me.
  • Puccia was the second Italian sandwich Daniel told us about. The word puccia references the type of roll–otherwise it is a standard combination of Italian sandwich ingredients. We’re suckers for Italian sandwiches here though.
  • Jim learned of Roti Chaud, a Mauritian flatbread wrapped around lima bean curry, while researching Roti Bakar, and thought it should be added to the list.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
