March List Sandwiches and February Wrapup
Greetings sandwich fans! It’s March, and it’s Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, and it’s Pączki Day, not to mention National Pancake Day, National Peanut Butter Lovers Day, National Pig Day, National Dadgum That’s Good Day, and about a dozen other assorted observances. If you can’t find a reason to stuff your face today, well, then face-stuffing may just not be for you. Strange site for you to end up on if that’s the case, but welcome anyway! Feel free to judge, but keep it to yourself. Regardless, the first day of the month here at the Tribunal is another kind of celebration, as it means we’ll be adding three new sandwiches to our list. This month’s sandwiches look pretty good! But first let’s take a look back at what we covered in February.
February started with a look at Japan’s Pizza Toast, a comfort food type of snack served at certain coffee shops in Japan, and now at Jim’s house as well. Next was New Jersey’s pork roll breakfast meat, also known as Taylor Ham–unless of course we make our own, doesn’t make much sense to call it by a brand name then. It’s a salty, porky cross between spam, coarse bologna, and a summer sausage that just cries out to be fried up and served in a bagel with egg and cheese. Great stuff! We also went deep down a rabbit hole investigating a type of steak sandwich local to Chicago’s southwest suburbs called the Poorboy. In addition to writing up all three of those sandwiches, Jim also started making Tiktok videos for each of them, to add an additional perspective on each. You can follow him here: @sandwichidiot
Now let’s take a look at March’s sandwiches!
In March we’ll try our hand at the Rachel, a kind of Reuben variant that seems very much like a stereotypical deli sandwich. Can’t go wrong there! or can we? Next we’ll try making some radish sandwiches, something a commenter on the site suggested years ago that we’re just now getting around to. Seems simple–we’ll try not to screw it up too badly. Finally, there’s the Riki Taki, a Dominican sandwich that seems quite a bit like the Chimichurri burger we covered in 2020 crossed with a sloppy joe and a panini and I don’t know what else. We’ll see when we get there.
Anybody out there who is familiar with one or more of these sandwiches and wants to tell us your take on them, please feel free to comment here, or reach out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or use the Contact us link above. We’d love to hear what you have to say!
Changes to the List
Wikipedia List:
- Pasty barm was added, which we have on our list already in the form of “Wigan kebab”
- Somebody removed roughly 85% of the sandwiches on the List, an act of drive-by vandalism that was quickly reverted by a bot protecting the page
- otherwise mostly formatting updates
Our List
- No additions to our list this month. But I’m sure there are more sandwiches out there for us to discover!
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
