August List Sandwiches and July Wrapup

It is August 1st, 2021, and apparently the past year never happened

As usual, there are three new sandwiches for us to explore here at the Tribunal, and one or two of them may even be available at local restaurants or markets. I’d better get out and try them before Chicago gets locked down again. First though, let’s recap the sandwiches we looked at in July.

July saw us road-tripping to Indianapolis, home of the “Manhattan,” another name for the type of open-face gravy-covered meat-and-potatoes sandwich served in diners just about everywhere in the US. They’re delicious though, so I’ll cut Indy some slack. OG Tribunal contributor Crit came out of semiretirement to tell us about her deep and abiding relationship with Marmalade, a post you should definitely read if you have not yet! Jim’s relationship with with marmalade is less complicated; he’s not a fan. Finally, we checked out a type of homemade sandwich spread used for kids’ parties in Puerto Rico called Mezcla. July was a mixed bag, but tastier things await us in August!

In August we’ll be trying Midye Tava, an Istanbul street food of breaded fried mussels on a stick that is sometimes stuffed into bread and eaten with Tarator sauce. This comes highly recommended by a Turkish friend, so I am looking forward to it! We’ll also try Moo Yong sandwiches, a type of light breakfast snack made using pork floss in Thailand according to that Thrillist article last summer that called me an “enterprising investigative sandwich blogger.” Finally, we’ll look into a type of stuffed pancake called Murtabak that some friends of the site have been raving about for years. It looks to be a great month of sandwiches here at the Tribunal!

Changes to the List

In July, something called a “Continental Roll” was added to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches. This appears to be a type of Italian sub specific to Perth in Western Australia. It looks delightful to be honest and I can’t wait to try it. It goes on our List.

Eggs Benedict was also added but then removed again fairly quickly. I think there’s certainly an argument to be made there. And to be fair, I wouldn’t mind spending some time acquainting myself with some bennies. So maybe we’ll add it to our List anyway.

Finally, against my better judgement, we’ve added the Philly Taco to our List. This is a silly stunt wherein a cheesesteak gets wrapped in a big floppy slice of pizza. Maybe I just want to travel to Philadelphia. We’ll see.

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
