April List Sandwiches and March Wrapup
Greetings Tribunal readers! It is April 1st but as always we are DEAD SERIOUS about our sandwiches here, so no pranks allowed! There are mysteries afoot for April though, which we’ll get into momentarily. First, though, let’s recap the sandwiches we looked at in March!
March saw the Tribunal taking on the South Asian cured meat treat, hunter beef, in a number of variations. There are so many more to try though! We’d still love to hear about your favorite hunter beef sandwich. We also took a little road trip to West Central Illinois to explore a regional secret Hardee’s menu item called The Harold. The site saw a boost in traffic from a writeup on The Takeout, The Onion’s very cool foodie site (Thanks Dennis!), as well as a pretty large community of WIU alumni on Facebook. Hi everyone! Welcome to the site, hope you stick around! Finally, with an assist from Jim’s friend Deniz, we tried the Istanbul street food called Islak burgers, a sort of steamy, peppery, tomatoey slider. On the non-List side of things, Jim took advantage of the trip downstate to try a little sandwich shop in his hometown that he’d been curious about for years but had never set foot in. Our advice: check out those little neighborhood places that catch your eye while you have a chance! You’ll never know until you do!
Now let’s take a look at April’s sandwiches!
We have waited a long time to bring you the Jim Shoe, an overloaded sub sandwich available at some shops in the Chicago area? Do you like Italian beef? Do you like corned beef? Do you like gyros? If you answered yes to any of the above, the Jim Shoe may be for you! If you haven’t read the linked article by Peter Engler, the definitive treatment, which is far more thorough than we are likely to be in our exploration of the sandwich. We’ll also look into what is sometimes called the Kabuli burger, sometimes the Afghan or Afghani burger, a tasty looking South/Central Asian wrap. Finally, we’ll explore the mystery behind what may or may not be an Austrian sandwich called Kaisers Jagdproviant. It seems to exist, but… we have questions. Will we be able to get an Austrian-American former governor of California to answer them?
Probably not! But there is an exciting month of sandwiches ahead regardless. We hope you’ll stick around to read about it!
Changes to the List
The Wikipedia List of Sandwiches has only seen 1 edit during the entire month of March, and that solely to remove a dead image link. Have they finally discovered every sandwich? No they have not. We encourage you to add any obscure local or regional sandwiches you know of to their list and keep them busy fact-checking you. Or bypass the middle man and just tell us about them! It’s our goal not just to document every sandwich, but to eat them all as well!
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
