December List Sandwiches and November Wrapup

Hi Sandwich fans! A new month means a new set of sandwiches on the Tribunal. December brings us one sandwich that I’ve been waiting a long while to try, and two that showcase the ridiculous excess that we in the US have become accustomed to. I don’t know if I can get through all of these but I’ll give it a shot.

First, though, let’s look back at November’s sandwiches!

We started November writing about the Japanese Korokke pan, a deep-fried croquette served in a hot dog bun with cabbage and sauce. Next we explored Italian-style cutlet sandwiches, and recreated a favorite of ours, the legendary Dennis from Parisi Bakery in Manhattan. Finally, we wrote about one of our favorite sandwiches, the Kutchi Dabeli, an aromatic and spicy potato mash served in a soft bread roll with peanuts, onions, chutneys, and pomegranate pips. It was a great lineup of sandwiches, and we’ll look back fondly on it as we descend into the hellmonth that will be December.

First up, a unique gyros or doner kebab variant native to Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Donair! We hoped to travel to the sandwich’s homeland to try it but 2020 is the year that foils all plans. Next up is KFC’s Double Down, which I personally never tried while it was available on KFC’s menu. Since it is no longer, we’ll have to whip up our own version. Finally, the “doughnut sandwich.” Apparently the Luther Burger wasn’t enough and people are putting all kinds of things in between donuts to make sandwiches. I am not excited about this but we’ll see if we can find any good ones.

It’s a hell of a way to end a hell of a year, that’s for sure.

Changes to the List

Many cosmetic edits were made this month to the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches, but at least one new sandwich snuck in as well

  • Zbójnicka, or Kanapka Zbójnicka. This appears to be a McDonald’s menu item in Poland, a burger with bacon, cheese, horseradish mayonnaise, and a potato pancake. Many McDonald’s menu items at least try to mimic some local street food so it’s possible there’s a real sandwich behind this. It merits further investigation.
  • “Completo” was removed. This referred more to a combination of condiments rather than a separate sandwich category, and was similar to or the same as the combination we covered as “Italiano.”
  • We keep having new sandwiches brought to our attention and adding them to our list as well, independent of the Wikipedia list. Our schedule now runs through May of 2022. The most recent sandwich added was the Pakistani (and Indian, and Bangladeshi, and overall South Asian, but apparently originally Pakistani) Hunter Beef sandwich. Thank you Arafat for reminding me of it!

Sandwich Tribunal

The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
