July List Sandwiches and June Wrapup
Happy July everyone! Thanks for everyone who stops in to take a look at these check-in posts, where we review the past month and lay out what’s coming up in the next month. We’ve kind of settled into a groove here at the Tribunal, where it’s basically just me writing about our three sandwiches of the month, but the original idea for this was a group blog, and I’m always open to hearing from new writers, so if anybody out there ever feels they have a special connection to one of our sandwiches of the month, please get in touch and let me know if you’d like to contribute.
June brought a pretty great set of sandwiches here at the Tribunal. We started the month with the pork chop bun, a delicious and simple sandwich showcasing the Asian/Portuguese fusion cuisine of Macau. We tried yet another breaded pork tenderloin, this time from the place that is credited with inventing them. And finally, we attempted to unravel the mystery of the prawn roll without visiting Australia or New Zealand where they can be found.
And now we’re on to July and three new sandwiches to try.
Prego is a Portuguese steak sandwich, giving me an opportunity to perfect the Portuguese bread rolls I started working on last month, perhaps? Primanti Brothers is a famous sandwich chain out of Pittsburgh where they add a vinaigrette-based slaw and French fries to every sandwich. And the Prosperity sandwich is a broiled open-faced sandwich out of St. Louis that appears to be a take on Louisville’s Hot Brown.
Anybody out there have anything to say about these sandwiches? Get in touch!
Changes to the List
Mostly there was a lot of vandalism to Wikipedia’s list of sandwiches in June; however, there was one notable addition. Marmalade sandwich was added on June 26th, apparently as a result of the current popularity of Paddington Bear. This would be a minor variant on the Jam sandwich we already covered; however, it should be added for completeness, and will go on the makeup queue at the bottom of our List.
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
I’m looking forward to prego rolls, which are a favourite in South Africa as well (presumably by way of the Portuguese colonies in Angola and Mozambique and the South African obsession with grilled red meat).
Marinus, if you are familiar with the sandwich by way of South Africa I’d love to get your take!
