May List Sandwiches and April Wrapup
Welcome to May, Tribunal readers. I can’t tell you how happy I am that so many of you keep reading. I mean, I’d be doing this anyway, but it’s nice to know that other people are interested.
April was a busy month for the Tribunal. I spent so long working on my treatment of the sandwich-adjacent Ploughman’s Lunch that I was scrambling by the end of the month to write up Pljeskavica and Po’ Boys. All three of these posts were very rewarding for me personally though–Pljeskavica made me more aware of the richness of Balkan cuisine, and eating all those Po’ Boys gave me a pretty good idea where most of the Cajun restaurants in the area are (and which one is Barack Obama’s favorite).
All months must come to an end though, and here we are treading boldly into new sandwich waters. Onward and upward!
In May we’ll be exploring Cleveland’s Polish Boy, a kielbasa in a bun with fries, BBQ sauce, and cole slaw. I’m assured it’s more delicious than it sounds. Also, we’ll be eating some porchetta sandwiches. Porchetta is an Italian pork roast and I might have to try making it myself, but I happen to know where there is at least one very good Porchetta sandwich in town and another I’m interested in trying. Either way, should be a good one. Finally, we’ll be trying to approximate the Finnish Porilainen, which is often described as “a cross between a hamburger and a hot dog” but basically looks like a fried bologna sandwich to me.
As always, if any of those sandwiches speak to you, and you’d like to speak about the sandwich to the world, please let me know! We’d love to have your insight!
Changes to the List
There was quite a bit of activity on the List in early April:
- Baloney (sic) salad sandwich was added on April 1st. This is bologna and pickles, ground up and bound together with mayonnaise. Can’t wait.
- Prego sandwich was added on April 1st. It’s a Portuguese sandwich of marinaded steak.
- The “Schmitter” was added on April 2nd. This is a steak sandwich of Philadelphian origin, but not a cheesesteak.
- The “Special” was added on April 2nd. This refers to deli special sandwiches, where a base meat such as roast beef or turkey is piled high with cole slaw and Russian dressing.
- Pork Roll/Taylor Ham was added on 3rd. Popular in New Jersey, it’s a processed cured pork product often served as part of a breakfast sandwich.
- Bratwurst was added on April 4th. This is the classic German sausage in a roll with mustard, onions, sauerkraut, etc.
Most of these have been in the List for nearly a month now without being edited back out, so they’ll be added to our schedule soon.
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
