July List Sandwiches and June Wrapup
This site is going to make me fat(ter).
June was an interesting month at the Tribunal. None of the sandwiches we were exploring had me particularly excited, but it’s interesting how the alphabetical nature of our List can give rise to themes, some expected, some unexpected. An expected theme might involve how there are something like 4 or 5 different sandwiches starting with the word “ham” in the list. You go into that month knowing you’re going to be eating a lot of cured pork. However, in June we had an enexpected theme of savory fillings in sweet breads for at least two of our sandwiches, the Luther Burger and the Mallorca de Jamon y Queso.
Of course, Marmite didn’t fit into that theme at all. And none of the sandwiches were terribly inspiring, though the Luther Burger certainly looked pretty, and the Pan Mallorca I made was some of the best bread I’ve had since I started this site.
I’m hoping that the July sandwiches will bring back the fun and excitement that the June sandwiches didn’t quite bring out. I’m also hoping that we’ll get some of our regular contributors back into the mix, or possibly even some new ones!
The Belgian Martino is a sandwich of raw, seasoned minced beef (steak tartare to some, “filet americaine” to the Belgians) on baguette with various accompaniments (pickles, onions, hot sauce, anchovies, etc). It sounds a little intimidating and I doubt I’ll find any place around here that makes them so it looks like I’m on my own here. Any Belgians read the site and feel like pitching in?
The meatball sandwich is an Italian-American gutbuster of a sandwich, not one of my favorites but I do enjoy them from time to time. I also live a few blocks from a place famous for them, or perhaps infamous is a better term. (I do not feel confident in my ability to finish a 10lb, 3 foot long meatball sandwich in under 3 hours, but a certain part of me feels compelled to try. We’ll see.)
The Cuban Medianoche is a “midnight snack” version of the Cubano made on sweeter, softer bread, and sounds delightful.
Any of these sandwiches sound like fun to you? Let me know your thoughts! Maybe you can be the newest Sandwich Tribunal contributor!
Changes to the List
On June 15th, a Finnish sandwich called Ruisleipä was added to the list. It sounds similar to German Butterbrot or Danish Smørrebrød, open-faced dense rye bread with butter and toppings. It’s going on the list, and it looks like we’ll be trying it late next year.
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
You ask, I awsner, the martino sandwich is a relic in Belgium . It is good, it is. It is a bit pickaly like in spicy tangy? Anyhow i usually take it with a leaf of salad. Love it😋
