May Sandwiches and April Wrapup
April was a month that tested our creativity here at the Tribunal. We covered the Larry David sandwich, a fictional creation intended to be terrible. (It basically was.) The Leberkäse sandwich gave me a chance to flex both my charcuterie and baking muscles. And finally we tried very hard to make a go of a lettuce sandwich, but, y’know, silk purse, sow’s ear, etc.
And now, on to May and some more delicious sandwiches!
Well we are starting off on the wrong foot here, or at least with a cheese that smells like a wrong foot (or many feet that are really quite wrong). Limburger is known for one thing, and that’s smelling bad. Maybe it’ll smell less bad in a sandwich? (Probably not.) We’ll also be covering the Lobster roll, and I’m looking forward to that one, though I won’t have an opportunity to try it in its native habitat of… Maine? Connecticut? Somewhere over that way. I will have an opportunity to try Lox in a place widely considered to be its epicenter though, as Mindy and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary in NYC later this month.
What about you? Anybody out there hanker for a hunk of (stinky) cheese, or any of our other sandwiches? Always eager to hear from somebody new, so let us know!
Changes to the List
There are a couple of pretty major additions to the list this month.
- The Shooter’s Sandwich was added on April 14th. This is big because I’ve always wanted to try one of these bad boys. And now I will, in November of 2018 according to the newly-updated List schedule.
- The Chopped Cheese, a melty mix of ground beef, onions, peppers and cheese sold in some Harlem bodegas that has had its moment in the spotlight recently, was added on April 20th. As it happens, during the very same NYC trip this month I mentioned earlier, I’ll be doing a little preliminary research on this sandwich as well, though it’ll have to be worked into a makeup month some time in the future. At least I’ll get to try one in a few weeks.
I am really excited about both of these new additions!
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
I’m really excited that you’re going to New York to taste the chopped cheese. I hope you have it at Hajji’s and not the upscale rip off versions. Then you’ll have to tell us how to make it. I live on the West Coast and that’s too far for me to go for a sandwich. I do have to travel to Chile to see my son and they make fabulous sandwiches there.
