April Sandwiches and March Wrapup
Wow. What a month! March 2017 had us trying three pretty wild and completely different sandwiches. There was Katsu Sando, a Japanese sandwich of breaded, fried pork cutlet, Kottenbutter, an obscure regional German sandwich that involved tracking down a sausage recipe that didn’t exist in English, and Kokoretsi, a Balkan offal dish that’s griddled, chopped up with tomatoes and spices, and stuffed into Turkish bread. I also got to try an Italian sub from an old-school place I hadn’t been previously, courtesy of a generous coworker. Two and a half years ago when Josh, Thom, and I looked at the Wikipedia List of Sandwiches and thought, man, we should eat every one of those! this is the kind of variety I was picturing.
April, well, April is always going to throw you a curveball. Here’s a first: the first sandwich on our schedule for April was removed from the Wikipedia list early in March. So do we continue with our schedule and cover the sandwich anyway? Or do we work with the list as it is? The reason it was removed is that it’s a fictional sandwich–the Larry David sandwich from Season 5, episode 1 of the show Curb Your Enthusiasm–and that, as such, it doesn’t belong on this list of actual sandwiches. I get it. And yet, and yet, I was kind of looking forward to visiting some Jewish delis and trying to find Sablefish. Not to mention that if I make one, it becomes an actual real sandwich. So heck with it, Larry David stays.
Leberkäse is an old favorite of mine, a loaf of a forcemeat-type sausage that is like a juicier and more delicious version of bologna. I’m looking forward to that. Now here comes another curveball. Lettuce? Is this a thing, for real? I’m not sure what I’ll write about a lettuce sandwich, but if anybody out there has any stories to tell about them, I’d love to hear it.
Any of these sandwiches speak to any of you? Is there anybody out there who actually eats lettuce sandwiches? As always, the Tribunal wants to hear from you. Let us know in the comments if you’d be interested in writing about one of this month’s sandwiches!
Changes to the List
- On March 4th, Bagel toast was added to the List. This would be a make-up sandwich, since we’re already past that part of the List, alphabetically. Tentatively adding it.
- As previously mentioned, on March 4th, the Larry David sandwich was removed from the List. Here it stays.
- Also on March 4th, Trancapecho was added.
- March 4th was a busy day. The Pepper and egg sandwich was added as well.
- Hot dog was added, removed, and then added again during the course of the month. Too late, suckas! We already covered it.
The idea behind this site is to explore the nature of sandwichness by eating every sandwich on the Official en.wikipedia.org List of Sandwiches and then to post here about it, preferably with lots of pictures and also words. Sandwich words.
