Livin’ That Sandwich Life
When you live in the upper midwest, some days, even in March, sometimes it looks like this when you get downtown to work:
Maybe you have some tasty leftovers you’ve brought with you for lunch, but you’re dreaming of sandwiches anyway. But the weather makes it unlikely you’ll go anywhere but to the microwave. (Yes, this is coming from the guy who rides a bike halfway across town in sub-zero weather. I’m becoming weak in my old age)
Sometimes, though, when you’re known as the sandwich guy, a coworker will, without prompting or warning, stop by your desk midmorning and drop off a gorgeous 12″ Italian sub from Conte di Savoia.
It’s a favorite of his, and he was in the area that morning, and he thought I needed to try it.
Of course I needed to try it. The bread is Turano rather than Damato’s, but I’m told that Damato’s is available if you ask. They use more meat than many places (like the late lamented Stefanelli & Sons did) and they use ham instead of mortadella, but the salami and capocollo are good, the giardiniera is bringing a lot of flavor and a little heat, and while on balance it’s quite meaty, it’s still a good sandwich. It was so big I could only finish half of it for lunch, and shared it with some other coworkers. I definitely need to go check this place out someday.
I like sandwiches.
I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great
