Quick and dirty cheese sandwich post

I’m a mother. I make a lot of sandwiches for my small child to take to school. My kids tend to favour fillings with no nutritional value, like jam or Vegemite or honey. I realised when my older boy was small that I could easily add cheese to these sandwiches for some dairy and protein, and he probably wouldn’t notice, so now I’ve continued this tradition with the small boy.

This week was a short week (Monday was a public holiday for Canberra day), and said boy likes to have a lunch order on Wednesdays when the school canteen makes pizza, so I only had to make three lunches this week. One day was a cheese and bacon roll, so that left two sandwich days.

Day one was cheese and honey. I buy a really nice strong flavoured Tasmanian Leatherwood honey. The cheese is essentially a cheddar or colby or something. It comes in massive presliced packs from Costco, but it’s not plastic processed cheese. (Man, there’s a post in that, I’m sure). Bread is white fibre-boosted supermarket bread. Butter, honey on both slices of bread and two slices of cheese (I know, I could’ve spread the honey better). The current sandwich fad with first graders is cut in 4 squares. Not two big triangles, which was the kindergarten fad.

Cheese and honey. You have to try it to believe it.

Day two was cheese and Vegemite. Of course. I raised him on this, It’s a staple. I’m not going to bother with links or Vegemite stories, you lot know how to use Google, and this is a quick post! North American readers may be surprised by the colour of our cheese and butter. Not half as surprised as I was the first time I visited the US. Cheese, water levels in toilet bowls, and light switches all caught (and still do catch) me off guard.

Again, butter and Vegemite on both slices of bread, two slices of cheese (they’re thin) and cut into squares.  The Vegemite is a bit thicker than a beginner would spread it, and I wouldn’t ever go any thicker than this. The bread got a bit squashed in the bag on the way home from the stupidmarket. Now it has ears.

Crit

I'm a mother of two boys. I work selling organic produce to gullible locals, and in my spare time I run as far as I can. Oh, and I live in Australia, married to a US citizen.
