A Quickie for Breakfast
We’ve all been hard at work on the new triad of sandwiches from the List for October so there’s been a bit of a lull in the proceedings. I know I myself have eaten a bunch of sandwiches trying to get a handle on the sandwich I’m researching right now. But I wanted to revisit an aside from a recent post.
In my Tale of Two Sandwiches post, I mentioned that someone at Delightful Pastries in the French Market told me that they’d be serving breakfast sandwiches at that location soon. This morning, I stopped by and they had the sandwiches available. One was a veggie sandwich and one was a “Meat Lover’s”, and you could get them on either a croissant or on a multigrain bread roll. I opted for the meaty one on a croissant.
Just looking at it, I imagined it was going to be a bit on the light side, but when I picked it up I was reassured by its bricklike heft. I am not being facetious–I wanted a substantial sandwich, and this certainly delivered on that front. Scrambled egg, with Polish ham, swiss cheese, and for some reason mayonnaise, spread and/or stuffed into a very good pastry. I thought the guy had said the sandwich was a “Meat Lover’s” sandwich and would contain bacon. There was no bacon. The guy was very soft spoken though and I may have misheard. Or maybe it was bacon mayo. Specks of something dark were nearly visible, submerged in the thick schmear of white goo.
Mayonnaise isn’t something I myself would put on a breakfast sandwich. I don’t think it’s wrong, really, it’s just not a choice I would have made. I’m not sure it really added anything to this sandwich other than an additional mess factor. With ham, eggs, and cheese, a sandwich should be plenty moist and not need the additional lubrication. If this was bacon mayo, it wasn’t advertising it with any salty or smoky flavors.
Overall, it was a satisfying sandwich, but not an outstanding one. I’m happy I tried it, though maybe I should have done a better job of clarifying what would be in it. And while I won’t rush back to get another one, I’ll likely have it again, the French Market being so convenient to my office.
UPDATE 10/26/2014: The sandwich was supposed to contain something called “Gypsy bacon,” which is a type of bacon spiced with paprika. I got another one this week and the bacon was there. It was also presented differently, sliced in half, each half skewered by a cocktail toothpick. The sandwich was not substantially improved by the addition but at least I got what I had paid for this time.
I like sandwiches.
I like a lot of other things too but sandwiches are pretty great
